A Message From Mr. Carlos C. Salinas on the occasion of PTC's 30th Anniversary Celebration
Today, the 19th of February, 2009, exactly 30 years from the time PTC was born, I stand before you with nothing but humble and heartfelt gratitude.
Gratitude for the life that PTC has lived over the last 30 years.
Gratitude for all the challenges we met, the opportunities we explored, the setbacks we overcame and the triumphs we achieved.
Gratitude to you, the management and staff of PTC, for your hard work, your loyalty and your dedication to the company’s mission and corporate objectives.
Gratitude to my wife Lita, for being by my side every single day and every step of the way since PTC was born; and to my children, for helping me carry out my vision for the company;
Gratitude to our seafarers, for sailing with PTC throughout the years, and for bringing honor and dignity not only to our company but more importantly, to our country.
Gratitude to our partners, for their unwavering support of PTC and their continued confidence in the Filipino seafarer.
Gratitude to the Philippine Government for the partnership in developing and promoting the employment of Filipino seafarers and ensuring their adequate protection.
Gratitude to God, for His unending goodness, guidance and grace.
The progression from a staff of 7 operating in 177 square meters with an initial deployment of 60, to where we find ourselves today, is a significant benchmark of growth, for which we are deeply grateful.
However, the significance lies, more importantly:
in what we have been able to contribute to the lives of thousands of seafarers and their families and over 500 employees who worked with us over the years;
in our having opened the doors for the Filipino seafarers who in the late 70’s were not the seafarer of choice;
in our having been able to help position the Philippines as it is today - the leading maritime manpower provider worldwide and a strategic player in the global shipping arena;
in our having contributed to the Philippine economy by creating employment opportunities that have facilitated the inward remittance of foreign exchange to our country.
This contribution to a purpose larger than ourselves is at the core of our corporate existence. Over the last 30 years, the impact of our daily work on our country and our fellow-Filipinos, has been the reason behind our being.
As we look ahead, it is difficult to predict what the future holds. The world is in economic chaos, an unprecedented financial crisis that has established institutions crumbling. In the maritime industry, from what was the biggest boom in shipping just recently, we now see vessels being laid up, a drop of newbuilding orders, significantly reduced freight rates.
Against this backdrop, now, more than ever, we need to continue to work closely and in unison with one another, bound by a common and singular purpose. As a company, we need to be mindful of and sensitive to what is happening around us; to operate efficiently; to serve our partners with a stronger pulse and passion, and help them achieve their own objectives for sustainability; to further develop the competence and quality of our officers and crew so that they continue to remain competitive in this rapidly changing industry; and to work even more closely with government to ensure that the Philippines maintains its leadership position in the global shipping industry.
Winston Churchill once said, that “Kites rise higher when they are against the wind….” During these very turbulent times, I am confident that if we put our minds and our hearts together, we will be able to go against the tide and rise above the challenges that lie ahead.
I wish you all a very, very happy anniversary. This occasion will not only be commemorated today, but all throughout this year through various meaningful programs, John Kennedy once said that “as we express gratitude, we must never forget, that the highest form of appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.” We will later explain how PTC will live this year, with gratitude.
On behalf of my wife, Mrs. Salinas, and my daughters Rica, Joey, Chris and Trishia, I extend my profound appreciation to all of you for having chosen to be a part of our PTC family. We celebrate this day with you and look forward to sharing with you, many, many more PTC years to come.
