Anchoring Futures: How PTC's Sea Mariners Program navigates students to maritime careers
JUNE 5, 2025

The vast expanse of the ocean has always beckoned with promises of adventure and opportunity. For many Filipino youth, a career at sea represents not just a job but a path to a dignified profession that uplifts families and contributes significantly to the national economy. Bridging the gap between aspiration and reality for senior high school students is the innovative Sea Mariners program, a flagship initiative by Philippine Transmarine Carriers (PTC) that is steering young minds towards rewarding maritime careers on board PTC-crewed vessels.
Established in 2013, the Sea Mariners program has evolved beyond a mere maritime awareness campaign. It has become a comprehensive youth empowerment and career guidance platform, deeply embedding itself in 12 active schools nationwide. Its core mission is clear: to equip each sea mariner with the foundational knowledge, essential skills, and the right mindset to enter the rigorous world of maritime education and, ultimately, a fulfilling career at sea.
"The maritime industry offers a truly global profession with immense potential for growth and stability," explains Captain Ronaldo SJ Enrile, Senior Adviser of PTC's Shipping Cluster and National Training Director of the Sea Mariners program. "However, the journey to becoming a competent seafarer requires dedication and proper preparation. The Sea Mariners program is designed to provide just that – a head start for these bright young individuals."
The Sea Mariners program offers a tiered pathway designed to support aspiring and deserving members at various stages of their journey. One crucial aspect is the comprehensive entrance exam support for those who wish to pursue maritime tertiary education. This includes intensive Maritime Entrance Examination Review Sessions (MEERS). Recently, 12 Sea Mariners successfully passed the highly competitive Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) Entrance Examination (PMMAEE), a significant highlight that underscores the program's effectiveness in preparing students for top maritime institutions.

"This is a momentous occasion for the Sea Mariners program and, more importantly, for these deserving young individuals," Captain Enrile shared. Their success in the PMMAEE is a testament to their hard work and the quality of preparation offered through MEERS. We are confident they will excel in their maritime studies."
Beyond academic preparation, the program also offers Basic Training as a senior high school work immersion. This invaluable experience, conducted through the state-of-the-art facilities of the Philippine Center for Advanced Maritime Simulation and Training, Inc. (PHILCAMSAT), allows Sea Mariners to gain practical exposure and understanding of shipboard operations. Upon successful completion of their work immersion, these students are qualified to obtain their Seaman's Record Book and MARINA ID, crucial first steps in their maritime careers.
Furthermore, for those who demonstrate exceptional aptitude and dedication, the program offers deployment opportunities as deck trainees to the domestic and international principals of PTC. This direct pathway to sea-based employment is a testament to the trust and confidence that PTC and its partners place in the capabilities of Sea Mariners graduates. Finally, the program also provides referrals to uniformed maritime civil service through enlistment at the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Navy, offering diverse career options within the maritime domain.

One such success story is Carlo Ponce Angeles, a dedicated Sea Mariner from Sto. Rosario National High School (SRNHS) in Minalin, Pampanga under the TVL-Maritime Strand. Growing up in a humble household, Carlo's determination to pursue a maritime career was fueled by a desire to uplift his family. Despite balancing work and studies, he graduated with outstanding academic achievements and is now aiming to study at Baliwag Maritime Academy (BMA). Both
"The Sea Mariners program opened my eyes to the incredible possibilities of a life at sea," Carlo expressed, his voice filled with hope. "It didn't just teach me about ships; it taught me about perseverance and the importance of aiming high. The support and guidance I received were invaluable."
Hector Brizuela, Program Manager and National Training Supervisor of the Sea Mariners Program, emphasizes the holistic impact of the initiative. "The Sea Mariners program is committed to empowering talented youth and providing pathways to rewarding careers in the maritime sector," Brizuela stated. "The success of these students in securing admission to PMMA on full scholarship and their qualification for Seaman's Record Books are powerful demonstrations of our program's effectiveness, made possible through the collaborative efforts of our team and the unwavering support of our sponsors and partners, particularly PHILCAMSAT, the Talent Acquisition Group (TAG), and the various PTC principals who are keen to embrace our Sea Mariners."
For maritime principal partners like TCC Group, the Sea Mariners program is an investment in the future of the maritime industry, ensuring a steady pipeline of competent and well-prepared Filipino seafarers. "We see the Sea Mariners program as cultivating the next generation of global maritime professionals," says Captain Florencio Jampil, Deputy General Manager of TCC Group, a maritime principal partner of PTC and supporter of the Sea Mariners program. "It's about identifying talent early, nurturing it, and guiding these young people towards a profession that is not only personally rewarding but also vital to global trade. When these students eventually join TCC-crewed vessels, they come with a strong foundation and a clear understanding of the commitment required. This translates to higher performance, better safety, and a more engaged workforce."
The journey from a senior high school classroom to the bridge or engine room of a global merchant vessel is a long one, filled with rigorous training and continuous learning. But with programs like PTC's Sea Mariners, the path is becoming clearer and more accessible for aspiring seafarers. By bridging the gap and providing comprehensive support through its tiered pathways and strong collaborations, PTC is not just crewing ships; it's building futures and empowering a new generation to master the seas with dignity and professionalism.
